Shoot 1: Call-to-action Summit announcement

Brief:     

The main streets, farms, and factories that support our country’s core, are struggling with shifting economic needs and demands, and larger societal issues like the obesity and opioid epidemics. This film focuses on the potential, growth, strength, and resilience of America’s Heartland, while simultaneously pointing out that it is now ranked worst for poverty and workforce participation. To help bring the genius and strength of Americans who live between the coasts together, The Walton Foundation has organized The Heartland Summit to develop, protect, and support the people of the Heartland.

The explanation of the need for the Summit, and the foundation’s leadership in organizing the gathering can be followed by a brief explanation of the conversations and events that will occur over the four day event. This can be a flashy, quick montage that highlights:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Arts + Culture
  • Regional Investment
  • Agriculture + Food
  • Healthy Living
  • Technology
  • 21st Century jobs 

The beating heart of this film is the beauty of the Heartland, and the opportunity this Summit is creating to truly celebrate and support it. Beauty images and anthemic music will make this video engaging and affecting for the viewer. Ideally creating the feeling in the viewer that this is a cause they want to champion, support, and participate in.

There could be a secondary deliverable with an additional section for participants to see that discusses the additional fun events occurring at the conference. Live music, trail rides, etc. This would be a great opportunity to show footage of the grounds where it will occur, and food vendors who might be there (similar foods if not specific brands).

Potential deliverables:

  • Secondary Summit Announcement focused on Participants (5 to 7 Minutes) - B-Roll (Stock and Original) + Voiceover + Graphics

Imagery: 

Imagery America’s Heartland needs to be a delicate interlacing of footage that showcases the challenges facing the region and the beauty of its existing infrastructure and residents. We would capture original footage of Bentonville, the region around it, and the grounds where the event will occur. This footage can make up the core of the positive/beauty footage that supports the role of the conference in the film.

For the ‘challenges’ footage, ideally, we spend a couple days driving through a few different regions. Perhaps a one-way drive from Bentonville to an alternate departure city that would allow for various landscape, city and environmental shots to be gathered. This could further be supported with stock footage purchases to fill out the film, if specific needs arise in post.

Shoot 2: 6 to 8 mini-docs about Influencers seeking to engage and support the Heartland

Brief:

A documentary film series that seeks to highlight the new and exciting work being done by participants in the Summit to help the Heartland. These should not only be informative; they should take Summit participants on emotional journeys that remind them that their work and their involvement at the Summit are addressing real lives, real needs, and creating real change. 

Each film will tell two stories. The first is the story of someone affected by one of the many challenges facing America. For example, job-loss, opioids, obesity, automation, etc. The second story is that of a change-maker and what they are doing to address the need. Ideally, the 2 subjects are directly related. The first having been helped by the second. If the individual’s work and efforts haven’t yet yielded direct impact, then a story of someone who could be helped by their work in the future will be an appropriate partnered story.

Accommodation should be made to create an additional two films above the target number. This way, stories and subjects that don’t resonate as strongly for the Summit audience, can be cut without leaving a content deficit. This material can still be delivered to be utilized at a later date. 

The Anthem Film will be an empowering showcase material from all of the films as an empowering celebration of the work being done at the conference by having each of the interviewees address the challenges facing the Heartland using shared language:

"One of the greatest challenges facing America is ______"
"I think ____ is the greatest struggle facing the Heartland" 
"I have made it my mission to help the Heartland address _____"

In a succinct, rapid, montage, these interviewees will describe the moment they set out to create change and how they are doing it. Finally, the film will culminate with messages of hope, change, and together, through the sharing of ideas and resources, everyone in the Heartland will thrive, succeed, and reach a better future.

Imagery: 

Imagery focuses on the individuals whose stories are being told. Beauty footage of their towns, offices, jobs, homes, and families. With the individual being assisted, b-roll should be slower, slightly darker, focusing on the challenge they are battling. With the innovator, b-roll should focus on their product or business, them interacting with their community, and the positive aspects of successful change.

2 or 3 person crew for Eights (8) 2-to-3-day shoots + Travel — Ideally, these can be coordinated either completely in tandem or in 2 chunks — Travel costs will need to be approximate until subjects, locations, and availability are nailed down. — We can currently figure out approx numbers re: Fees, Gear rentals

Shoot 3: Filming The Heartland Summit

Brief: 

The recap film is a pure celebration of the Summit, its goals, its participants, and its successes. It will touch on why it was organized, who organized, and who participated, but it will be dominated mostly by highlights from the events and beautiful cinematic footage of the grounds and the participants. 

The footage will be capture by 2 teams. The first team is a set of three roving cameras that attend events, conversations, and social hours in order to document as much of the event as possible, as beautifully as possible. While they will be capturing audio, they are mostly the visual backbone of the event. The second team will have run a dedicated interview set-up for participants in the Summit to come through, talk about their causes and goals, and talk about how the Summit is supporting their continued progress towards their goals. The interview set-up can also coordinate with Summit organizers to grab quick lines of support from guests, speakers, and VIPs visiting the grounds.

Potential deliverables:

  • Official Summit recap film - (4 to 6 minutes) - B-Roll, interview, and Graphics
  • Social Media edits (3 - :15 second edits) - The same footage cut down with graphics into an (1) Summit recap short, (2) VIP and speaker shout outs, (3) ‘until next year’
  • Content string outs: B-Roll Selects organized by day (no color correction), Interview string-outs for participants (minimal editing), Interview string-outs for VIPs (minimal editing)

Imagery: 

Imagery will be cinematic, up tempo and energizing to showcase the positivity evoked by the Summit. We want to not only showcase the energy put into the Summit but also the energy gained by all those in attendance. The edit pace will be relatively quick in a "sizzle" style with a few potential moments of "breath" to showcase potentially poignant or beautiful imagery.
